A major goal of the School of Engineering has been to establish a computing and information management environment that is driven not by the technology itself, but by the needs of the user community. This is reflected in a philosophy that values open sharing of information, and collaboration between and among users in Engineering and among distant collaborators. This approach is reflected in the computing infrastructure that we have developed within the school, the teaching/learning environment that is being developed for our education and scholarship, the support of our research activities, the information empowerment of our staff, and our professional and academic linkages with sister institutions, be they academic, industrial, or governmental.
Information Empowerment
The school is unique in its ability to empower new academic learning communities through open source culture and architecture and are making progress in how faculty, staff and students embrace open source concepts and infrastructure, starting with computer courses and student learning projects.

Open Source Teaching/Learning Collaboratory
The school's faculty and staff have created an innovative prototype Open Source Teaching/Learning Collaboratory that is the foundation for offering the vast majority of our Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) courses, as well as courses from across our engineering disciplines, and, increasingly, computer courses and computer intensive courses a throughout our university.
Open Source Teaching and Learning Facility for Computer Science and Engineering Education
Open Source Teaching/Learning Collaboratory created at UC Merced that will provide the foundation for offering the vast majority of our Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) courses, as well as courses from across our engineering disciplines, and, increasingly, computer courses and computer intensive courses throughout our university.
