Why UC Merced?
I grew up local in the San Joaquin valley, and had a change to tour UC Merced when I was in high school. I was inspired by the intense research focus of the campus and the amount of opportunities available here due to the growing nature of the University. Staying local also allowed me to connect and give back to my hometown in a way that wouldn't be possible elsewhere.
Why Your Major?
Bioengineering was the perfect intersection of my interest in engineering while still being routed in health and biology. My time in the major has been incredibly rewarding, and I’ve had the chance to engage in meaningful research and apply what I’ve learned to real-world challenges.
Inspiration and Mentors
My family has been my biggest inspiration, who showed me how to help the community around them while still doing what they love. My high school English teacher, Mrs. Ruelas, played a pivotal role in guiding me toward Bioengineering; I wouldn't be on this path without her. I thank Stephanie, Isabell, Sam, and Rosa (and Dante & Pablo too!) for making Merced feel like home. I also owe a big thanks to my my research mentors Kai and Dr. Zamora, my PIs Dr. Spencer, Dr. McCloskey, and all of the graduate students in their labs for their mentorship, guidance and belief in me as I’ve grown into a researcher.
Memorable Academic Experience
My time doing research here at UC Merced has been a great experience, as well as all of the classes, group projects, and late nights studying with friends.
What's Next?
I'm excited to say that I'll be continuing my research here as a Bioengineering Ph.D. student and I'm really looking forward to the continuing years!
