Kent Carey

Dr. Kent Carey served as the Director of University Relations and Research Services at Keysight Technologies until his retirement in the Fall of 2018. Prior to this, he worked as the University Research Program Manager for Agilent Technologies, connecting researchers at Agilent Technologies to top university researchers all over the world. Dr. Carey is particularly focused on university research in North America and Asia. Dr. Carey also spent many years as a manager and researcher in Agilent Labs and HP Labs. Most recently Dr. Carey managed a department of 30 people in Agilent Labs working on a combination of optoelectronic and CMOS imaging technologies. Over the years his research teams focused on components for fiber optic communication and communication test equipment including high-bandwidth InP/GaInAs photodiodes, vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), and blue LEDs and lasers. His group’s work on parallel optical links demonstrated data rates up to 500 Gb/s over arrays of multi-mode optical fibers in 2005. Dr. Carey managed research teams in Beijing and Tokyo. He lived in Tokyo with his family from August 1997 to December 2009. He is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area. After receiving his B.S. degree from U.C. Berkeley in 1976 with a double major in Electrical Engineering and Materials Science he went on to graduate school at Stanford in Materials Science, receiving an M.S. in 1977 and Ph.D. in 1981. Kent started at Hewlett-Packard in 1978 spending most of his time since then at HP Labs and Agilent Labs.
