Why UC Merced?

I chose UC Merced because it offered the perfect combination of cutting-edge research opportunities and a close-knit community where I could truly make a difference. Its reasonable proximity to the Bay Area and moderate class sizes further added to its appeal. I was especially drawn to the university’s pioneering spirit and the opportunity to contribute to its growing legacy in the field of engineering.

Why Your Major?

During my high school years, I developed a strong passion for software technologies, with a particular interest in the data science domain. I was fascinated by how data could be transformed into powerful insights and solutions that drive real-world change. Choosing to major in Computer Science and Engineering felt like a natural extension of that curiosity.

UC Merced’s emphasis on innovation, research, and hands-on learning provided the ideal environment for me to deepen my technical skills and broaden my understanding of the field. I was excited by the prospect of contributing to meaningful projects, collaborating with forward-thinking peers and faculty, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible through software.

Inspiration and Mentors

My journey has been profoundly shaped by the mentorship of Professor Florin Rusu, whose guidance transformed my approach to both research methodologies and problem-solving. His mentorship not only deepened my technical understanding but also instilled in me the confidence to pursue ambitious projects and explore new areas within software engineering.

Beyond the classroom, the collaborative environment among my peers at UC Merced has been equally influential. Working alongside such a supportive and driven community taught me the value of teamwork, perseverance, and sharing ideas.

Additionally, my parents have been a constant source of inspiration. From an early age, they ingrained in me a strong work ethic and a natural curiosity about how things work, laying the foundation for my passion for engineering. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my academic and personal growth.

Memorable Academic Experience

One of my most memorable academic experiences at UC Merced was working on a collaborative research project focused on vector databases. This project challenged me to step beyond my comfort zone, sharpening my skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and technical research.

In addition to research, my experience as a Learning Assistant in the math department was equally transformative. Explaining complex mathematical concepts to other students not only helped them succeed but also deepened my understanding. It showed me that teaching and learning are deeply interconnected, and reinforced my belief that technology’s greatest power lies in democratizing knowledge and creating opportunities for others. Both experiences significantly shaped my academic journey.

What's Next?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a graduate program focused on Artificial Intelligence. In the near future, I aspire to contribute to the fields of data science and AI by developing cost-effective and impactful engineering solutions that address real-world challenges.

My experience at UC Merced has laid a strong foundation for this next chapter, equipping me with the technical expertise, research skills, and collaborative mindset needed to thrive. I'm excited to continue building on what I've learned as I venture into my Next Play!
