Why UC Merced?
I joined UC Merced because of its close connection to the Latino community. As a first-generation Mexican-American student navigating California's higher education system, knowing that a significant portion of the student body shares similar cultural roots gave me confidence that I could foster a sense of belonging while embracing my heritage. In addition, UC Merced’s status as the newest UC campus inspired me to believe in its growth and innovation. I was captivated by the variety of research opportunities available, knowing that being part of a growing institution would allow me to contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge projects.
Why Your Major?
I've always wanted to be an engineer since engineering enables us to experience and contribute to the world in unique and imaginative ways. As a naturally curious and rational person, I was drawn to the problem-solving mindset that defines engineering. The choice of the particular engineering field, however, was far more difficult. I grew up in a small Mexican town surrounded by mountains and green landscapes, which gave me a great respect for the natural world and a strong connection to it. This connection sparked my sense of responsibility to preserve the world around me and the resources that support us. I now see that environmental engineering was my passion and that I was meant for it.
Inspiration and Mentors:
I’ve been inspired by different people at different points in my life during my academic career. My family has always been my greatest source of inspiration. I learned the value of perseverance and commitment from my parents, who were never able to pursue an academic education. They have given a lot for my siblings to pursue higher education in Mexico, and their commitment inspires me daily to take advantage of every opportunity I've been given. My nephews and niece also inspire me, as I strive to be a role model for them, encouraging them to dream big and always work towards being their best selves. I've had the privilege of finding inspiration in my mentor, Dr. Erin Hestir, at UC Merced. She offered me the opportunity to demonstrate my skills, welcomed me into her lab, and had belief in me. Watching her excel as a strong, accomplished woman in the field of engineering has been incredibly empowering. Her example has shown me that not only is there a place for women in engineering, but we can also thrive and lead in this field. My family and mentors' support and guidance have fueled my determination to succeed and shaped me into the person I am today.
Memorable Academic Experience:
One of the most impactful academic experiences I’ve had was participating in the programs offered by UROC and UC LEADS. These opportunities transformed the way I approached and experienced academic life at a university. Through these programs, I was able to develop essential research skills and gain invaluable hands-on experience.
My two research summers, one at UC Merced and the other at UC Davis, were not only enriching but also incredibly rewarding. They challenged me to grow academically and personally while fostering a sense of curiosity and perseverance. I gained a deeper knowledge of what it means to contribute to research as a result of these experiences, which were full of opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, and discovery. In addition to the knowledge and skills I gained, these programs connected me with a group of people who now help and mentor me in my career.
What's Next?
I strongly believe that research is where my future lies. However, after graduation, I plan to spend a few years exploring various opportunities to identify a specific problem or topic that truly excites me. During this time, I aim to gain practical experience, deepen my understanding of the field, and refine my research interests. Once I’ve found the area that resonates with my passions and goals, I intend to return to academia to pursue a PhD.
Anything else?
I would like to express my gratitude to my mentor, my family, and all of the people who have helped me along the way. They have been essential in helping me to feel at home at UC Merced and in California in general. One of the most difficult experiences in my life has been my time at UC Merced. Navigating significant adjustments and transitioning to a completely unfamiliar environment challenged me in ways I never could have imagined. But despite all of its difficulties, this experience has been just as exciting, rewarding, and enriching. I've never been happier and prouder with who I've grown into. Reflecting on the fact that I am not only the first member in my family to graduate from a university with international recognition but also the Outstanding Student of the School of Engineering, is very fulfilling.
