Why UC Merced?

I initially chose UC Merced because of the strong financial aid they provided. I didn’t know much about the school at first, but once I got here, I really grew to love it. The semester system offers a comfortable pace, and the small campus creates a welcoming, close-knit environment. Being at a smaller university also means there are more opportunities to get involved and connect with faculty. What inspired me most was seeing how quickly the campus was developing, and I knew I wanted to be part of that growth while making a lasting impact.

Why Your Major?

Growing up, I’ve always been interested in math and problem-solving. And I learned that engineering is the discipline where math and physics are applied to help develop the world around us. I knew I wanted to go into engineering, but I started UCM as a mechanical engineering major because it’s the only discipline I ever heard about. After a year, I learned that I was more interested in learning about the built environment around us. I switched to Civil Engineering, which was the perfect fit because it’s a broad major where we get to learn about the infrastructure we rely on daily. Driving past the construction of the new Medical Education Building on campus, I’m always reminded of how incredible it is to witness a structure come to life—and to understand the careful planning, design, and construction process behind it.

Inspiration and Mentors

My inspiration and motivation for everything in my life is my faith in the Lord Yeshua Christ. I thank the Lord for all the blessings in my life and the opportunity and privilege it has been as a first-generation student to receive a college degree. My family has been my greatest support throughout my academic journey. My mom has made countless sacrifices and has always stood behind my goals. My sister has been my best friend. And my husband has been my rock, always uplifting and encouraging me to become the best version of myself. I am deeply grateful for their love and unwavering support.

I’d like to thank Dr. Yarra for his support in my undergraduate journey and his pivotal role in helping establish an ASCE student chapter on campus. I’d like to thank my professors and the CE faculty for their contributions to building the program and for the opportunities they’ve made possible. I'd also like to acknowledge my friends and peers who have been by my side throughout this journey.

Memorable Academic Experience

The most valuable experience of my academic journey was being a part of CESA and the opportunities that this organization has opened up for me. I highly encourage every student to get involved beyond just classes. Joining organizations is the perfect way to get involved, and stepping into a leadership position has helped me grow immensely. I’ve met amazing friends and was able to be a part of a community that consistently provided personal, academic, and professional support.

What's Next?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in construction management and begin studying for the FE exam. I’ll also be moving back home to Southern California, where I’m excited to start this new chapter of life alongside my husband.
