Why UC Merced?

I chose UC Merced because it was a new and growing university. I was drawn to the opportunities it offered for students to shape and expand their fields of study. As an aspiring civil engineer, I saw UC Merced as the perfect place to contribute to a developing legacy while preparing for my career. Coming from a small charter high school, I also appreciated the university's smaller class sizes, which allowed me to form meaningful connections with professors, lecturers, and TAs. These aspects made UC Merced the ideal choice for my academic journey.

Why Your Major?

I was initially amazed to learn just how much of our world is shaped by civil engineers—from bridges and dams to parks and homes. The vast development and innovation created by civil engineers inspired me to be part of that transformative work. From a young age, I’ve had a love for art and sought a career that could combine my creative interests with a stable and impactful profession. Initially, I considered becoming a graphic designer, but my perspective shifted after taking a SPARK class on architecture and learning about the incredible projects built by engineers. That experience solidified my desire to become a civil engineer. I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful impact on the world, whether by helping provide housing to those in need or creating public green spaces where children and families could gather and thrive. I ultimately chose civil engineering because it offers me the opportunity to use my skills and creativity to make a difference for the greater good.

Inspiration and Mentors

My greatest inspiration and unwavering source of support is my mom. As a PhD student herself, she understood the challenges and demands of academic life. She has been my rock, always there during late nights when I needed guidance or simply someone to talk to. Her encouragement and belief in me ensured I never lost sight of my goal to graduate, even when times were tough. She also played an instrumental role in managing the logistical and financial aspects of university life, easing the burdens that could have otherwise deterred me. Without her, I wouldn’t have persevered in civil engineering, and for that, I am endlessly grateful. Thank you, Mama, for your love and support—you mean the world and several galaxies to me.

Memorable Academic Experience

One of the most memorable academic experiences of my undergraduate journey was presenting my NASA KelpFire research at the 2024 summer symposium. After dedicating the entire spring semester and summer to this project with my teammates, standing before an audience and sharing our findings felt like a monumental achievement. I vividly remember the proud expressions on my family’s faces as I explained sedimentation runoff and its coastal consequences, a moment that validated all the effort I had put into the research. This opportunity allowed me to contribute to meaningful work and reinforced my sense of purpose in making an impact through civil engineering.

What's Next?

As an engineer, my immediate goal is to prepare for and successfully pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, a critical step toward obtaining my professional licensure. After graduation, I plan to dedicate time to studying for the FE before beginning my role as a Field Engineer at Hensel Phelps Construction Company. After gaining some years of professional experience, I intend to return to school to pursue a master’s degree. This advanced education will enhance my technical skills and position me as a more valuable asset to my company and the broader engineering profession. My ultimate career aspiration is to work for the Department of Energy, where I can contribute to projects focused on utilities and renewable energy. In the far future, I plan to obtain my Professional Engineering (PE) license and maybe go back to school again for a PhD.

Anything else?

Receiving the Outstanding Student Award was a collective achievement, not just my own. This milestone wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of faculty, friends, and family who encouraged and guided me throughout my journey. A special shout-out goes to the incredible twins (you know who you are!) who tackled difficult classes with me. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who played a role in my success. Thank you all!
