Mo Dehghani

Dr. Mohammad “Mo” Dehghani became chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) August 1, 2019. Chancellor Dehghani joined Missouri S&T from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he served as vice provost for research, innovation and entrepreneurship from 2013 until his appointment at S&T. Before joining Stevens, Chancellor Dehghani was a professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University and founding director of the Johns Hopkins University Systems Institute, where he established collaborative research and application programs with the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Health and Human Services, and others. He also served as associate laboratory director for engineering and sciences for the Applied Physics Laboratory. Prior to joining Hopkins, he led the New Technologies Division at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary applied science and engineering national security laboratory. At Missouri S&T, Chancellor Dehghani has developed a vision to elevate the university’s national visibility, grow enrollment, and strengthen research. In 2020, he secured a $300 million donation to S&T from alumnus Fred Kummer and his wife June to establish the Kummer Institute Foundation. The foundation supports scholarships and fellowships, four new research centers, and the new Kummer College of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, among other initiatives. The gift was the largest single to any university in the state, public or private, and one of the largest ever to any U.S. university. Chancellor Dehghani holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University, where he also earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering. Chancellor Dehghani is married to Mina Saffari, who is a pharmacologist. They have one son, Devon.
